The Palos Verdes Hills Nursery School (PVHNS) was founded in 1953 by
Peninsula families desiring greater involvement with their children's first
school experience. In 1958 a permanent site was established at 6 Lariat Lane,
Rolling Hills Estates, and was built through the cooperative efforts of the
original member families. Palos Verdes Hills Nursery School is a nonprofit
corporation governed by the general membership through a Board of Directors and
is supported by contributions from this Directory.
A parent participation nursery school is unique in that it fosters friendships
and education to both the children and the parents. At the PVHNS five to six
parents, guided by two staff teachers, are directly involved in the children's
daily learning experiences. The parents have the opportunities to be involved
and witness the various growth and developmental behaviors and characteristics
of each child. Monthly meetings provide the opportunity for parents and teachers
to discuss skills for more effective adult-child interactions. The school also
offers speakers and workshops on current topics in child development and
parent-child dynamics.
PVHNS children are encouraged to explore their world by experiencing arts,
crafts, science, music, movement, imaginative play, cooking, serving snacks, and
by using cognitive learning materials. Trike trails, a playhouse, a gazebo and a
variety of climbing gyms add intrigue to our spacious yard.
At PVHNS, our emphasis is to offer the challenge and flexibility to satisfy
children's changing interests and needs in a positive and happy environment. A
positive self-image is our ultimate goal.
PVHNS operates two classes. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the
four-year-olds meet for a program at the pre-kindergarten level. On Tuesday
and Thursday, the three-year-old children enjoy activities for their
developmental level.
